Delice D’Ivoire – Text testing

After looking around for a while, this was the typeface I decided to use. I think it’s quite free and expressive but also easy to read so it will work for a sign.

I hand drew the text then scanned it in to digitally edit it so it looked cleaner but not so much it lost that handmade feel. When I was drawing it, I didn’t realise I was going to run out of paper so I had to draw the word ‘food!’ separately and edit that in later.IMG_9996.jpg

After cleaning up my type, I went about editing it so it matched the colours of the sign already and was ready to add my pattern.

Delice D’Ivoire – Research

I started my research by looking at the company website to get an idea of their branding. I really liked the colours, patterns and authentic, natural feel of it all.

When looking into the typography, I tried looking up some African type so I could try and reflect the place the food is from. I found them very free and expressive but still easily legible. I want to capture this essence with the type I choose for the sign itself.

I also noticed some geometric patterns around the edge of the signs the company already uses so I looked into geometric patterns and found quite a few hand-drawn patterns which kind of capture the feel I wanted from the sign. I think drawing a pattern myself will work in my favour.

Delice D’Ivoire – Brief

After seeing the hand-drawn signs I made for Blackwell’s last year, the owner of the local fast food company, Delice D’Ivoire contacted me to commission a sign.

The only specifications I was given were that it had to fit her boards and it had to have the slogan ‘Discover the most popular West African street food!’ on it.

This gives me a lot of freedom to explore and create something for a brand that works with their brand but has my creativity attached.

Jazz and I volunteered to run our stall at the Artist’s books fair at The Tetley and I decided I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to put some work on show so I decided to revisit my ‘Tiny Recommendations’ that I made for final exhibition in first year.

They went down really well at the exhibition so I decided to upgrade them and make more for books I’ve read since then. I made a long list of books and typed them up on my typewriter.

Although there was opportunity for mistakes, this looked much better and I really enjoyed making them.

They were well received and almost all of them had gone by the end of the book fair. This is definitely something I will do again at future events.

GIDE – Final Video – [Hide and Seek]

I am very proud of our video. For 3 days work, we have done an incredible job to produce what we did.

After submitting the videos, we had a few free hours and then it was the award ceremony. When we watched through all the videos, I was convinced that we weren’t going to win. Ours was so different and out-there compared to the others. However, that may have worked in our favour as our film was awarded the Graham Savage Prize!

I was in such shock when they called our names I couldn’t move. I was absolutely ecstatic and that was only furthered by the fact that we tied 1st place with Molly’s group which made both our weeks.

I am so happy and grateful for the experience and thankful for my group who were all amazing.

GIDE – Editing

Linda and I both knew a bit about how to use PremierePro so we decided to work together on editing the video. Because her laptop was in German, I had to dictate the editing while she did it.

We thought we could add tension to the video by distorting it as it progressed. Writing a list of ways we could do that helped us to make sure we had our bases covered.

We briefly debated on using facts and reasons for/against cameras in stores so we looked some up but we felt like it wouldn’t really work so we didn’t follow this idea.

When it came to the audio for the film, we were just going to use music until we stumbled across a piece of accidental audio captured on one of the clips. The manager of the store who was stood with the group while they filmed the security setup said ‘She looks like a thief, suspicious’ and when we heard it, we knew we had to work it in.

For the music we just searched around youtube until we found something that fit the finished video and managed to find a suspenseful piece that worked perfectly.

We conferred with the rest of the group a lot during the editing process and asked their opinion on things. The poster team had created a kind of logo for the film so we incorporated it as a title at the start.

Our film ended up following our storyboard pretty closely. Because we took so much footage, we had a lot to work with to realise our vision.

After finishing the film and showing it to the tutors, Joleen and Lindsey before submitting it and they had a couple of notes for us to work on so we sorted those as quickly as we could.

It was approaching deadline and the group were split on whether the film should be colour or greyscale. In the end we took a vote and made the film greyscale but it took all the time we had left and we were working til the last minute before handing the film over to Sophie.

 

GIDE – Filming

When we were planning, we decided that we would ask the store if we could look at or film their security setup. We made a plan in case they said no, which we thought was the most likely possibility.

When we got to the store, Tamara found the manager and asked him about the security room. Much to our surprise he said yes! We were taken down to the security room and shown the screens. There were a lot more cameras than I had counted originally, many of them were almost completely hidden from the eye.

The concept for our film was that the main character is a very private person who doesn’t like the idea of being filmed, it makes them very paranoid and anxious. Upon entering the store, this person realises that there are cameras and tries to avoid them. The tension is built up with a quickening pace and suspenseful music as the person begins to realise there is no way they can shop in the store and have their privacy.

We felt that I was the most capable person to play the main character which I was fine with but I would have liked to be able to take a directorial role or use the camera.

Using the cameras in the security office to film me walking round the store proved difficult because we had no way of communicating if we’d got the shot or if I needed to redo it because the room where the team were filming was in the basement and it took a few minutes to come up.

After filming the cameras and thanking the manager, we took some shots of me sneaking around the shop normally. We got a lot of footage which meant we had lots to work with when it came to editing.

It was a good day of filming, everyone pitched in and worked together well to get everything we needed.

When we got back from filming, we delegated tasks for editing and poster creation. Li, Tasoula and Angelo would work on the poster while Linda and I would work on the video and Tamara supervised both teams and checked we weren’t going in two different direction.

GIDE – Brainstorming and splitting the groups

When we got back from location scouting, we all sat down and shared the borders we had discovered. We had a variety of things and after everyone had shared, we organised them into categories and voted on the ones that we were most interested in.

We picked two ideas that were the most popular and split into two groups, depending which idea you preferred to do. IMG_0296

Much to my delight, privacy vs security was one of the most popular so I could continue working on the idea that I’d been thinking about all day.

After brainstorming, we were asked by Lindsey, Joleen and Sophie to identify the two opposing sides of our conflict. It was fairly easy because our category was called privacy vs security.

Before we all went home, we decided to start a storyboard so we would have an idea of what we wanted to film the next day

GIDE – Location/Idea scouting

The area my group were given was an area with two large supermarkets. On the first day, we went down there to look for borders/conflicts that we could base our films on.

While in the shops, I noticed several things that had the potential to make a good film.

1, There are different foods and products here than back home.

There were many products and brands that I didn’t recognise in these stores. It didn’t occur to me that many of the brands I am used to are not international and are not sold in Lugano.

I found this quite interesting and combined with the language barrier, it made it quite difficult for me to be sure the food I was potentially buying was vegetarian.

This idea had potential but I wasn’t sure how we could make it into a film that involved the local people so I kept looking.

2, The make-up and toiletries are separated by gender.

While there are certain products that only men need and only women need, I found it funny that some of the products that all people use, such as hairspray, suncream and mouthwash, were segregated as well.

There are much bigger issues surrounding the divide between men and women and I’m not sure this is the conduit for discussing it. I feel there is the potential for the scope to get too large and we would move away from the point.

3, The alcohol is in a separate section at the very back of the store.

You have to go all the way into the store to get to the section where the alcohol is. I discussed this with one out our tutors Joleen and she pointed out that it may be because people may steal alcohol and this way they have been spotted by all the cameras.

Although there is the potential to talk about youth drinking culture, especially in comparison to our own countries, what Joleen said got me thinking about the cameras in the store which lead me to my strongest idea.

4, Privacy vs security, there are cameras and screens everywhere in the store.

I had noticed a couple of the screens while walking around the store but after talking to Joleen, I noticed how many of them there were.

I started walking around taking pictures and trying to count how many cameras and screens I could see. In total I found 7 cameras, in each corner, by the front door, by the checkout area, by the makeup and by the hard liquor. I found three screens where you can see the camera footage, by the front door, by the makeup and by the hard liquor.

Then I began trying to sneak around the store, avoiding the cameras. I found that there was absolutely no way to go into the store without being seen. After that, I began to look at the people in the store, no one seemed particularly bothered that they were being filmed.

The screen by the front door makes you feel instantly watched when you come in and then again by the makeup and liquor, the things people are most likely to steal.

I felt like this idea had a lot of potential and we could do some interesting things with it so I decided this was the idea I would champion and do my best to persuade my group to do.

GIDE – Brief

During the GIDE trip to Lugano, we were split into small groups and given a brief.

Each of us were given an area of the city, ours being an area with two large supermarkets. We had to identify a physical, social or environmental border or conflict and produce a short film, under 3 minutes, and a poster to accompany it. We had 3 days to identify our border, pick a topic, plan, film, edit and make the poster.

All of the films were entered into the Graham Savage award and the best film would win.
