Photobook Research – Jeff Woodbury

Map art has been something I’ve been interested in for a long time and with the inclusion of maps in my photobook, I thought I’d look at Jeff Woodbury’s work as inspiration for how I could include these in my book. Woodbury dissects maps so that only the streets are left leaving spidery patterns with almost no context or landmarks to show where it is.

This is an interesting way of stripping maps down to the bare minimum and their base function of showing people what streets to travel down. It is a really nice simplification that cuts out everything but the streets, taking all of the character out of an area and showing that it could be almost anywhere.

Because my book is about streets of significance, keeping only the streets on the map is something I could consider doing as a way of adding to my maps.
